Born Philadelphia, PA, Dec. 1947. Educated at Philadelphia H.S. for Girls, Vassar College (A.B. English, with art history and philosophy minors), and SUNY/Buffalo (M.A. English, specializing in Medieval Literature). Married the poet Martin Steven Cohen, 1968; one daughter, Ariel Nikiya, b. 1985; div. 2000. Editor, journalist, essayist, and dance critic. Work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Nation, The New Republic, The Jewish Daily Forward, The Threepenny Review, and many other periodicals. Since 2000, have taught as an adjunct member of the Dance faculty at Barnard College. Fellow of the Guggenheim and Woodrow Wilson foundations. Whiting Writers Award, 1987.
